Well dad gum it!
Another Easter has come and gone and He still has not come down out of the clouds. No doubt some 1977 years after his sojourn on earth, it has occurred to Him that He made some pretty brassy claims and fulfilling them is going to take a little longer than He thought. Otherwise He would have landed by now.
For example one of His claims was that when He returned, the stars would all fall out of the sky. “And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken." (Mark 13:25) Making that happen would require some exquisite timing! And preparation! His Father would have been required to set all this in motion billions of years before the earth was even created. Why? Because when we observe a star, we are seeing the state it was in millions, even billions of years ago. It could have already fizzled out as far as we know. I ventured out just before daylight on Easter morning to retrieve the Sunday paper, glanced skyward and was relieved to observe that as far as I could tell, they were all hanging there about where they should be.
So far so good.
All the same, I think I know why we haven't heard from God for something over 4000 years when bushes were burning and donkeys were talking...and even before that when snakes were so articulate and verbose.
I think He has been extremely busy checking His star charts and time tables. As the bible truly teaches us, only He knows when the end will arrive. (Along with the falling stars) So for example, just for arguments sake, let’s suppose he knows His Son will make his grand entry a week from next Thursday. He will need to consult His star chart to see how far in advance the star Arcturus must start falling in order for it to coincide with His Coming. Since Arcturus is 36 light years away, He would have had to set it in motion just after our tax returns were due in April, 1974.
How about the pole star, otherwise know as the North Star? Its light takes around 430 years to arrive. He would need to knock the props out from under that one in the year 1680, which purely by coincidence is the year that the brightest comet ever seen from earth was first spotted by telescope. Newton’s comet, as it came to be known was the brightest comet of the 17th century--visible even in daytime--and noted for its spectacularly long tail.
If readers will forgive the pun, we ain't seen nothin' yet. The farthest known star in the universe is in the galaxy Abell, which lies some 13.2 billion light years from earth. Think of it! That thing was hangin' out there over 13 billion years before God even created our little paradise some 6500 years ago. But let's find one a little closer, say some 4000 light years distant. We could use the star Rho Cassiopeia . It's around that distance...give or take a few billion miles. Standing on Rho Cassiopeia looking back toward earth (not recommended) we would see the earth as it was 4000 years ago. We could actually observe all those little Baptists riding around on their pet triceratops just exactly as the 27 million dollar Creationist Museum near Louisville, KY depicts the scene.
In 1999, Scientists using the Hubble Space Telescope estimated there were 125 billion galaxies in the universe. Since these galaxies are themselves light years across they contain stars that differ in their distance from earth by light years.
Forget light years. Even a light day would make a difference as to whether Christians will see all the stars fall the same day that Jesus arrives. And there are literally trillions of these things. God has to set his magic timer so that each one of them will start falling at exactly the right time to coincide with the arrival of his One and Only Begotten Son. The timing of the fireworks must be so exquisitely precise that only an omnipotent, omniscient being could accomplish the feat. If it took God 40 days and 40 nights to drown all of us, imagine how long it will take for Him to set all those trillions of timers. It’s entirely possible that when Jesus made the claim that on His arrival the stars would fall, he put Big Daddy in the Sky under a time constraint which, lucky for the 4 ½ billion plus on the planet that foolishly reject His Son as their Personal Savior, He bought them more time.
O.K., so Jesus missed his arrival target by a couple thousand years. Compared to the billions of years the Universe has been around, that’s the blink of an eye. We can forgive him this slight oversight. Let’s not look a gift horse in the mouth. Instead, count this Easter as reprieve number one thousand, nine hundred and seventy seven. (2010 minus 33)
Billboards all across this country proclaim the good news. He is coming.
Like a thief in the night.
Just as soon as His Daddy gets all those timers set.

"Terrorist at night!!!" :-) You know I am reading a book titled, JESUS WAS IN INDIA. It explains that Jesus was in India during his formative years and his philosophy was rooted in India. The book is written by Holger Kersten, first published in Germany in 1986. As you know, India has always been a sources of sorcery. If the claims in this book are correct, he became a master magician and fooled people by means of mass hypnosis and sleight of hand, which could explain some of his miracles.
ReplyDeleteLooks like your blog is picking up steam! :-)

ReplyDeleteOh Shoot! I want to see that removed blog! Btw, I tried to find this article yesterday and I could not get it to appear! I am sorry to admit, the part I loved the most was the star lesson. What a "trip." (No pun intended!) Hi Bob! Where's Jim?

CA Gal, I don't know how that happened, but when you mess with visions, anything can happen. Charlie and I grew up together. We took our first airplane ride together in a small plane as kids. I was scared to death, but he had the nerve to try it again and as you might know flew for Delta for many years. I know he is a modest guy, but he has always been good at about everything he has tried. I expect he has spent a lot of time looking at the stars all those years he was flying, but his knowledge goes much beyond that. Like you,I always seem to learn something from him.

Philo the Jew of Alexandria who lived 20 BCE. - 50 CE. was one of the most important authors of the Second Temple Judea period. He lived during the time of both Jesus and Paul, but never mentions them and certainly not any dead people coming to life. Had it happened he would have mentioned it. Here are a couple of his quotes. To put it mildly, Moses invented the stories or copied others. You won't hear fundamentalist preachers ever quote these words. HERE ARE SOME QUOTES:
ReplyDelete"Of other lawgivers, some have set forth what they considered to be just and reasonable, in a naked and unadorned manner, while others, investing their ideas with an abundance of amplification, have sought to bewilder the people, by burying the truth under a heap of fabulous inventions. But Moses, rejecting both of these methods, the one as inconsiderate, careless, and non-philosophical, and the other as mendacious and full of trickery, made the beginning of his laws entirely beautiful, and in all respects admirable, neither at once declaring what ought to be done or the contrary, nor (since it was necessary to mold beforehand the dispositions of those who were to use his laws) inventing fables himself or adopting those which had been invented by others."
CHARLIE, YOU WILL SMILE WHEN YOU READ THE PART ABOUT STARS.
"Of existing things, there are some which partake neither of virtue nor of vice; as for instance, plants and irrational animals; the one, because they are destitute of soul, and are regulated by a nature void of sense; and the other, because they are not endowed with mind of reason. But mind and reason may be looked upon as the abode of virtue and vice; as it is in them that they seem to dwell. Some things again partake of virtue alone, being without any participation in any kind of vice; as for instance, the stars, for they are said to be animals, and animals endowed with intelligence; or I might rather say, the mind of each of them is wholly and entirely virtuous, and not susceptible of every kind of evil."

Philo also said, "It is on this account that Moses says, at the time of creation of man alone that God said, 'Let us make man,' which expression shows an assumption of other beings to himself as assistants --". Ben Franklin would likely have agreed with him. We don't know for sure just what he believed, but the idea of a god for each planet was one of his considerations and the one god of creation was not the god of our planet. This is what may have prompted his friend Thomas Jefferson to say, "But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket or breaks my leg".
ReplyDeleteWhen I hear religious people say our founding fathers wrote the constitution to support religion (their religion), I like to point out their intent was also to protect us from religion. They need to know more about Jefferson who wrote the Declaration of Independence and Madison who wrote the constitution as well as others of that time. But ignorance reigns supreme in the religious world.

Good comments Jim. Wonder if your preacher would be interested in taking a few lessons from you?
ReplyDeleteI think my next blog will be titled, "Do you have religion or does religion have you?
Charlie, Everyone needs to know more about the history of religion. I would recommend The Faiths of our Fathers (What America's Founders Really Believed) by Alf J.Mapp,JR. Not to be confused with fundamentalist Tim LaHaye's Faith of Our Fathers where he concluded that, "were George Washington living today, he would freely identify with the Bible-believing branch of evangelical Christianity that is having such a positive influence on our nation". Here is your picture of delusion. Washington, John Adams, Jefferson, Franklin and Madison were more deists if anything. They seem to have valued Christian principles taught in the sermon on the mount, but none of them could be considered what LaHaye means by Bible-believing evangelical Christians. Most would be near the Universal Unitarians of today or maybe the United Church of Christ much like President Obama and we know what fundamentalists think of him. I have had to endure hearing him called the anti-Christ among other outrageous comments. By the way the United Church of Christ or Congregationalists were the ones who brought religion here in the first place. They broke away from my group in the 1800's over the issue of slavery. So,as President Obama would say, "They were on the right side of history".

Oh,as to the question of my preacher or any other preacher taking lessons from me, not a chance. I'm complimented more for keeping quiet than pointing out what the bible really says, but these people have known me for a long time and know I'm not trying to destroy their faith, rather help them understand it. They simply aren't secure enough to change their opinions. I respect that, but feel morally obligated to attempt helping them better understand religion. They can continue in their religion, but understand guilt and being judgmental don't have to be a part of it.

Great comments, Jim. Given my experience with evangelicals, since they like you, they are praying "earnestly" for you so you don't go to hell. I believed that same thing for way too long. The vietnam war helped me grow up. Our best man was a marine over there and I saw how ludicrous it was to pray he was "kept" while others around him were dying.

Here is a work I developed a few years ago. It is natural for us to want to believe in a God who provide for us in the afterlife. With that thought in mind I wrote this for those looking for comfort.
ReplyDeleteFar too often we are reminded of the shortness of this experience called life. Friends and loved ones are suddenly gone. We realize we too will shortly follow. How do we cope with this undeniable realization? Where can we find security for ourselves and comfort when we lose our loved ones? Is there something beyond this life? These questions have been asked since the beginning of time. No one can be sure he or she has discovered the answers to these questions. We simply fall back on the faith found within our belief system learned from our family and culture. Where we live often determines just what that belief system is. Most of these systems include a belief in some sort of life after death. The good are rewarded and the bad are punished, but no one has returned from death to explain all this in detail. Of course, not all people believe this. Many see nothing beyond life. Who is right? Who can actually say? One thing we can all agree on is our physical life ends at some point. We can all agree that something or some power formed us along with the universe and all that it contains. Our earth has been changing ever since it was created. Isn't it natural to assume that we too should be changed? This universe appears well planned and perfected to exist in some fashion for what we call eternity. Why should mankind be created any differently? Our body will return to the earth, but what about the part known as the soul or spirit? Again, those who wish may fall back on faith to explain where it goes. Even Socrates pondered this question in 399 B.C. as he was dying from his drink of hemlock. He responded, "My comrades, there is great hope that when I arrive where I am traveling, there if anywhere I shall sufficiently possess for which all our study has been pursued in this past life. So the journey which has been commanded for me is made with great hope and the same for any other man who believes he has got his mind purified, as I call it". He went on to say," Those who love wisdom and are practicing dying, death to them is the least terrible thing in the world". Socrates was never considered a religious person, but he could look at the universe and how well it was created and conclude its created beings had nothing to fear in death. For those who have an abiding faith within their belief system, comfort should come easy. Look around at the beauty of this universe and all its wonders and reassure yourself that you too are a part of it and will treated no worse than other creations! Remember, it's not about how many years you have to live; it's how you live the years you have. Relax; enjoy life to it fullest each day.

ReplyDeleteA church is the only place where you are welcomed for what you believe and unceremoniously kicked out for what you know.
