Freedom of Choice

One of the most absurd  and weakest arguments put forth by Christians and their apologists is the notion of “freedom of choice.” For example Peter Kreeft, a devoted Catholic, claims non- believers can’t blame god if we spend eternity in unimaginable agony since we have freedom of choice. Freedom of choice, he contends, can only mean that we freely choose to go there. Really Peter? So how does that work exactly? Well, lets see. I can choose to live in eternal bliss or I can choose unimaginable eternal torment. This is really an important decision so let me think about it for a moment. O.K.!! I choose eternal torment!

Its not that I CHOOSE not to believe in fairy tales like talking snakes and donkeys, a 6000 year old earth, a flood covering the highest point on earth by 15 cubits, pregnant virgins, dead men coming back alive and all the rest of it. Its because I CANNOT believe it. It is literally impossible to believe something we disbelieve. Here, let me prove it. If you are a female, I want you to believe you are Sarah Palin. If you are male, I want you to believe you are Dick Cheney. I’ll give you a few moments to get your belief engine up to speed.

Couldn’t do it could you? Of course you couldn't, unless you are insane.

So the loving god of the universe is going to send me, along with billions of others; Muslims, Hindus, Jews, atheists, agnostics etc to hell forever because we cannot make ourselves believe the unbelievable. And of course since he is omniscient, he knew what was going to happen to us when he made us. Right? Its pretty obvious to me. Believers are going to have to come up with a better argument.
