According to the CIA World Factbook, the present birthrate on our planet is 19.15 per thousand population. The population just hit 7 billion. This means that in 2011, there will be approximately 134 million births.
The death rate is only 8.12 per thousand population. This means that in 2011 there will be approximately 57 million deaths.
It’s interesting to consider those numbers as they pertain to the Christian religion.
In order to be a Christian, you have no choice but to place Jesus as the foundational center of your religious beliefs. That’s what being a true Christian is. Your beliefs are centered around the things Jesus allegedly said and did as related in the Christian bible.
Here's an example. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)
Let’s set aside the death rate for a moment and consider only the number of births that will happen in 2011; 134 million. Picture in your mind all those innocent little babies. 367,123 in one day;15,296 in one hour; 255 in one minute.
If you, like most Americans, read at the rate of 200 words per minute, you will have read 222 words by the time you get to the end of this sentence. It took you 66 seconds. In those 66 seconds 280 innocent young babies drew their first breath outside the womb.
Are you sitting down?
According to Gentle Jesus Meek and Mild, as clearly stated in John 14:6; out of the 280 innocent babies born while you were reading the above, 187 are destined for an eternity of unimaginable torment in hell because they will reject him as their personal savior. That’s not a typo. 170 per minute. 24 hours a day. 7 days a week. 365 days a year. Straight to hell. Every minute of every day 170 unsuspecting innocent little babies come into this world destined for hell because their parents were either Muslims, Hindus, Jewish or just simply didn't buy into the myth.
This is not difficult to understand. Anyone capable of doing third grade math must necessarily come to the same conclusion. Only 33 % of the earth’s population are Christian. 67% completely reject the idea that Jesus is their personal savior. Simply multiply .67 times 280 (the number of babies born while you were reading the mentioned text, and the answer is 187.
Now here’s the strange part; the part that utterly fascinates me. That little mathematical fact will not change anyone’s belief about gentle Jesus, meek and mild. Why? Because their brains were indoctrinated before they had developed enough to attain critical thinking skills and some degree of logic. A child’s brain, stuffed with nonsense which is reinforced week after week by well meaning adults, will have great difficulty in ridding themselves of it later in life. Only a gifted few are able to overcome the indoctrination.
Let me give you an example, but this time I’ll pick another religion; Hinduism.
High in the Kashmir Mountains of India at an elevation of nearly 13,000 feet is a cave which contains a large ice stalagmite. It is formed each year between May and August, when water drips from the roof of the cave and freezes on the cave floor, slowly growing till it reaches several feet in height, then gradually diminishes thereafter till the cycle starts again the next year. Hindus believe this is the cave where one of their plethora of gods, Shiva, explained the secret of life and eternity to his girlfriend, Parvati.
Now what this thing; this huge icicle, this thing that resembles a penis through the eyes of Hindus does, is it grows and shrinks according to the phases of the moon. Get it? Each year around 400,000 Hindus make the long, difficult, dangerous and expensive journey to the mouth of the cave where they stand in awe for a few seconds marveling and obsessing over it.
Now why would they do something so silly? Because, Hindu children, before their minds are fully developed, are taught by adults that this oversized popcicle, is holy and that there is something sacred about it. Do Christians lay awake at night wondering whether they should convert to Hinduism so they could worship this holy popcicle? No. Do Hindus lay awake at night wondering whether they should convert to Christianity with its pregnant virgins, dead men walking and talking snakes? No. Their minds have already been contaminated by other foolishness….by adults when they were children and before they could think critically on their own.
The population of the USA stands at about 310 million. Around 80 percent or nearly 250 million believe (or claim to believe) that Jesus is their savior. None of the 250 million buy into the icicle thing. There are about 850 million Hindus. None of them believe Jesus rose from the dead .
I happen to agree with them both.
We live in a natural world. There has never been a miracle. Not one. Evolution has proven without a shadow of doubt that Adam and Eve are a product of ancient myth. There was never a Garden of Eden. There has never been a talking snake or donkey; not one person has ever been turned into a pillar of salt. There was never an ark or a flood covering the highest mountain by 15 cubits. (Any airline pilot can tell you that the temperature at that altitude (29,085 ft) on a standard day is 43 degrees below zero). And long before reaching that altitude everything on the fictional ark would have died from lack of oxygen and arrived at the top of the mountain frozen solid as that steak in your freezer.
That we still have adults teaching this foolishness to children is to me one of the most egregious sins one can commit.
But because we are afraid to die, we cling to these delusions of a life in the hereafter where we will spend an eternity sitting on a cloud, playing a harp and praising god and his son Jesus.
To paraphrase Mark Twain, I spent billions of years not being born and apparently suffered no inconvenience from it. I don’t expect to be inconvenienced after I die.
Don't be afraid to use your power of reason. Its the greatest gift you could ever hope for.
If you are unaware that the first murder in recorded history was committed over a rejected gift, then I suggest you reopen the holy inerrant bible you have been carrying to church for the past few decades. Turn to Genesis in the OT.
4.4 And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
4:5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect.
4:8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
Just remember this. If there is a god, then he/she/it is most likely the one who gave you the gift of reason. Not using it is tantamount to rejecting the gift. I can think of only one sin more egregious than not using our power of reason and critical thinking. That sin is contaminating the minds of young children so that they fail to attain those powers. There is a reason that two thirds of our Supreme Court think that Jesus comes in convenient wafer form. When they were children, they were taught that by adults.
If they had been born to Hindu parents, no doubt they would be eagerly searching for frozen popcicles.

After 15 years of reading everything I could about religions of the world (especially my own) I was forced to recognized man's scriptures were written by primitive men mostly to justify what they had done or try to explain natural causes either blaming or praising an imaginary god. Kings killed people and said a god told them to do it. It shouldn't be all that difficult for objective people to figure that out.

Nuttin' like fear of the unknown (death) to promote ignorance. Great piece, Charlie. I am so thankful I had you to help me admit what I had known for a long time but just could not say out loud. If one is looking for some ugly human beings, one need go no further than the church, mosque, synagogue, etc., etc., etc.
ReplyDeleteJim, good to see your comment, too!

I heard a more liberal preacher last Sunday in Oklahoma (Yes, Oklahoma). He pointed out how we have become institutionalized (as opposed to indoctrinated) and we must change or the church will die. His huge expensive building can now expect only 375 to show up each Sunday. He correctly pointed out the bible has Jesus saying "Go and make disciples" not go and build churches. I wish him well in his next job. They run about over $1000 short of their budget each week. His elders may figure they have one too many preachers.
